Re-designing work for collaborative learning
Patrick’s journey with Agile dates back to the late 90s when he spearheaded the software development of a startup implementing XP practices within a Scrum and Adaptive Project Management framework. Renowned within the Kanban community, Patrick’s expertise extends to upstream, customer, and discovery Kanban. He was honoured with the 2015 Brickell Key award for his outstanding contributions to the Kanban community.
In 2012, Patrick, along with his partner Arlette Vercammen, founded Okaloa. Since its inception, both Patrick and Arlette have delved deep into the realm of learning, driven by their passion for helping individuals, teams, and organizations in adopting innovative work designs. This passion culminated in the creation of Okaloa Flowlab, a constraint-led learning platform to teach how to combine flow, collaboration, and learning perspectives to introduce new ways of working.
Today, their focus is on work design – understanding what, why, and how we work to create coherence between strategy, organization, and ways of working. By putting work design in the spotlight, they offer a fresh perspective on change and invite others to explore how work can be intentionally shaped to create meaningful impact and achieve shared goals.

Abstract
Much of the work we do involves design. But what happens when we take work itself as the subject of design? How do we intentionally give shape to the work? Why should we? And how is this different from how work takes shape now?
Using the ACID framework (assumptions, concerns, issues, and defects), we will look at work through a design lens and find out how current ‘common sense’ work design fails. We will look at alternative work designs and discuss how to shape work to fit context using both intelligent design and evolutionary principles.
